March 5 was when I attended my first Union City Board of Commissioners meeting. There were many people in attendance.

Commissioner Chris Irizarry, who resigned as commissioner, gave a sincere from the heart speech. They were his own words, and it was obvious to me that they have something special in Union City not to be taken for granted. I would pray to God we had the same in North Bergen.

In my opinion, you would never see anything like this in a North Bergen Board of Commissioners meeting. In fact, from my observation, the commissioners are very rarely allowed to speak freely. It seems that Mayor Nicholas Sacco limits their answers to questions when a member of the public attempts an inquiry of one of the commissioners.

They are quickly reminded by the town attorney to "address the chair," meaning speak to the mayor only. We would never get such an emotional, heartfelt speech like Mr. Irizarry's from one of our North Bergen commissioners, and if we did, it would probably have to be approved by Mayor Sacco. Old Testament Moses said to the Pharaoh of Egypt, "Let my people go." Mayor Sacco, let your commissioners speak.
