A Guttenberg resident will be trying to topple state Sen. Nick Sacco in the Democratic primary contest in June.

"The time has come to challenge the political machine that has controlled Hudson County for more than the past 50 years," said Francisco Torres, who works in real estate. "It is time to put the interest of the people before the interest of a political machine."

Under the banner "Democrats for the People," Torres is running in the 32nd District with state Assembly candidates Ines F. Serna of North Bergen and Mayra Dominguez of West New York.

Sacco, who is also the mayor of North Bergen, has held the Senate seat since 1993 and has been mayor of North Bergen since 1991. Sacco is also the associate superintendent of North Bergen Public Schools.

Heading a ticket endorsed by the Hudson County Democratic Organization, Sacco is running for reelection with Assemblyman Vincent Prieto of Secaucus, who chairs the powerful Assembly Budget Committee, and Assemblywoman Angelica Jiminez of West New York.

Torres criticized Sacco for holding three public positions, earning him $300,000 in salaries and benefits per year.

He also charged that Sacco has failed to take a leadership role in reforming immigration laws that could lead to citizenship for millions of Latinos, the majority of the residents in the 32nd District, according to Torres.

Torres ran unsuccessfully for an Assembly seat as an independent in the primary two years ago.

A spokesman for Sacco dismissed Torres’ criticisms.

"Senator Sacco has always been a strong supporter of comprehensive immigration reform and the Dream Act, and that is just one of many reasons why he has the support of outstanding Hispanic leaders like Senator Robert Menendez and Congressman Albio Sires, as well as the vast majority of voters in the 32nd district," the spokesman said.

The 32nd District includes East Newark, Guttenberg, Harrison, Kearny, North Bergen, Secaucus, and West New York in Hudson County and Edgewater and Fairview in Bergen County.

The primary election will be held June 4.
